NATO Chronicles

At the NATO Summit in Strasbourg and Kehl in April 2009, it was decided that a new strategic concept should be drawn up in time for the next summit, scheduled to be held in Lisbon the 19 and 20 of November 2010. The Group of Experts chaired by Madeleine K. Albright, former US Secretary of State, was tasked with analysing the security challenges of the 21st century and the role of NATO in the new international environment. It presented its analyses and recommendations to the NATO Secretary General and to the nations in May 2010.
The subjects covered in the report are the new international security environment, NATO's main tasks and its relations with partner nations, the importance of public opinion, cooperation between NATO and other international organizations, NATO’s relations with Russia and the Alliance’s enlargement policy.
NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division has asked CAPA Entreprises (a subsidiary of CAPA audio-visual press agency) in Paris to make five documentaries illustrating the reality of NATO’s activities and their impact on the everyday life of citizens:
- Combating piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin – Danish vessel “Absalon”.
- NATO’s contribution to the energy security of its member nations and partner nations through its network of pipelines.
- NATO support for Afghan students by providing universities with high-speed Internet connections.
- Deployment of an anti-terrorist aerial surveillance system between Russia and neighbouring NATO nations.
- In the framework of research programmes, creation of more ecological agricultural systems in Georgia, and promotion of collaboration among Georgian, Armenian and Azeri scientists and farmers.
